Red and Green are NOT just for Christmas!
Published: December 7th, 2015
If ever a color scheme evokes a particular holiday season, it’s probably the omnipresent combo of red and green that establishes the season of stockings hung over fireplaces, evergreen trees bedecked with shiny red ornaments and lights, and a mythical figure in a bright red suit whooshing over snow-covered rooftops in a sleigh.
But just as the red and green combo enlivens the home in the dead of winter, so it can bring a certain panache to any room at any time. Red and green aren’t just for Christmas.
No less an icon than Dorothy Draper, one of the earliest modern interior designers in America, used red and green throughout her work. Known for using large scale patterns and vibrant splashes of color, her design of the Greenbrier Resort is a perfect example. The crimson red staircase elegantly complements the large green leaf print wallpaper. The super high gloss black and white floor imbues the design with a bold and graphic punch. Nothing Christmas about this interior!
In this next photo of Draper’s work, red and green flow beautifully through an exquisite sequence of rooms.
Still have a hard time believing this complimentary combo can’t shake it’s holiday reputation? Check out this modern conference room with bold red chairs surrounded by an overscaled organic printed wallcovering. The varying shades of green and the white backdrop give a crisp and clean feeling to the space.
Looking for something a little more personal? This Moroccan style residential interior charms us by joining the deep reds of an oriental rug with the spring green of the walls. Bright red and green accessories enrich the contrast.
Lest you think that the distribution of red and green need be doled out in equal proportions, check out this simple interior with a green accent wall and cherry red clock that pops. Perfect!
