Classic Blue and White: Never Out of Style

Published: November 4th, 2016

Fluffy clouds set against the clear blue sky… The way the earth looks from the moon… The cool intricacy of Wedgwood… Sailor suits!  No, it’s not a list of my favorite things; it’s just that one of our current projects has me thinking about all things blue and white. This classic color combination never goes out of style. The combo provides a crisp, cool counterpoint to warm textures and colors like wood found in architectural elements and antiques. Pale pastel blues and whites will soothe, while bright whites and deep blues will energize.

Our client’s collection of antique pieces — including a dining table, buffet and piano — will sit beautifully in a navy and white color scheme with cream and gold accents. Here’s what we’re planning for them. We anchor the living room with a sky blue Lino rug from Restoration Hardware with sumptuous pile. It sets the tone against a cherry wood floor. A straw-colored raffia from Dessin Fournir will add warmth and texture to the walls. Pillows wrapped in a navy and white print with shimmery accents by Pierre Frey add playful accents against a sofa covered in white Perennials fabric. A warm, white chenille will pop against a cerused wood finish for a pair of Robert Lighton chairs. Lastly, a pair of swivel chairs wrapped in a rich navy blue velvet from Kravet complete the scheme.

I’m still thinking of blue and white… the blue and white striped uniforms of a baseball team, perhaps. Well, maybe that’s because the Cubs just won the World Series!
